5 Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

Hypoallergenic dog breeds usually fall into two categories: those with little or no hair, like the hairless Chinese Crested, and those that don't shed their coat and need to have their fur trimmed or stripped frequently.

Many people think that the allergy is in the hair, so dogs that don't shed won't cause allergic responses. This isn't true, though, because most people who are allergic to dogs aren't actually allergic to the fur.

Instead, they are generally allergic to dog dander, which is a tiny piece of skin that all animals with fur or feathers shed, or to a protein that is found in dog dander, saliva, and urine.

1. Bichon Frise

This small, playful dog has curly white fur that keeps growing instead of falling out. Not only do they rarely drool, but their thick coat traps free hair and dander, which won't come out until the fur is removed.

2. Border Terrier

Border terriers are one of the most famous terrier breeds. Their thick, wiry coat makes them a great choice for a dog that doesn't shed. But their coat needs to be stripped by a pro once or twice a year, so keep that in mind.

3. Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is a dog breed that doesn't bother people with allergies. It comes in two types: bald and full coat. The fully coated breed has two layers of hair that don't shed and need to be brushed regularly.

4. Poodles

Poodles come in three different sizes, so whether you want a small, medium, or big dog, you can find a poodle that fits your needs. They have curly coats that don't shed and need to be brushed by a professional to keep them under control.

5. Portuguese Water Dog

When Obama got a Portuguese Water Dog while he was in office, its popularity went through the roof. His favorite dogs, Bo and Sunny, are Portuguese Water Dogs.
